And so we close the book on another chapter in our lives. The last 4+ years have been a lot of fun for Mav and I. We have gotten to meet a lot of really great people, run a lot of miles, and seen some great stretches of road. Thank you for joining us on this odyssey! We are working to get everything sorted out and put to bed. If you left something behind, let us know. We will get the finisher shirt done and sent to you and will also send out the awards for the three time finishers. Please be patient as we all have real jobs too
In all three edition combined we had a total of 369 unique participants. You came from 39 states, DC, Canada & Germany.

We had 34 people successfully complete all three editions of the Mother Road 100. They are listed here in the order of their combined time for all three races. Richard Smith was crowned King of the Road and Julie Aistars was crowned Queen of the Road:
Today was a good day for the Pirana’s. Mav, T3 and BFG successfully marked the entire 100 miles of the Mother Road course. We started before the sun was up. With Mav’s red truck loaded with 10 gallons of liquid chalk paint, paint buckets, rollers, stencils and other misc tools, we headed to Catoosa. Once at the finish line the fun began.
The chalk paint (made by Buzz, our friend at HIS paint) is mixed thick so it won’t settle. We pour some into an empty 5 gallon bucket fitted with a roller screen and add some water to thin.
The stencils are cut from 1/16th inch plastic sheet and are about 3 foot square. We sweep the road, lay down the stencil, roll the paint, add arrows or other things as needed and move to the next location. At each stop T3 grabs the paint bucket and roller, Mav grab the broom and starts sweeping and BFG handles the large, unwieldy and paint covered stencil. It is like a dance….a messy, tiring and difficult dance. And one that we did 96 times over 100 miles in 9 hours.
We painted a mark before and after each point on the course where we have to turn or deviate from the highway. If you are running along the course on the left side of the road (against traffic) you will see a marking and an arrow telling you where to go at each turn.
There were a few mishaps:
BFG was grabbing the bucket out of the truck (remember, that is T3’s job) and he literally pulled the handle off the bucket. As the bucket fell he reached for it and so was bent over the bucket when it hit the ground. This resulted in lots of opportunities to comment on getting paint on things later.
After a very long day working our way backwards along the course (we mark the course from finish to start so that we are driving along the side of the road we will run) we finally made it to Baxter Springs and made our mark at the start line:
Tomorrow we put together the goodie bags and get everything else ready for packet pick-up Friday. It is going to be a great day on the Mother Road!
Check the weather in Baxter Springs, KS for race start and in Catoosa, OK for finish. Right now it looks like highs in the mid 60’s and lows in the 30’s with no rain.
Baxter Springs:
Catoosa:
Packet pick-up is Friday from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Hampton Inn in Catoosa. We have a meeting room, so we should be easy to find. You can pick up your race packet (bib, pins, and runner’s handbook), your goodie bag and your shirt. You can weigh in (or weight until Saturday, pun intended). You CANNOT leave your drop bags and you CANNOT pick up your timing chip. We will not stay later than 7:00 PM. We are running too and we need to get to Joplin and get to bed J
If you cannot come to packet pick-up in Catoosa on Friday, you can pick up your bib, pins, and handbook at the race start on Saturday. We will not bring goodie bags to the start line. You can get a goodie bag at the finish line, but it is your responsibility to find a race staff member and ask for it.
If you are riding the bus from Catoosa to the start line on Saturday morning:
Park in the lot NORTH of the stadium and track close to the road. The bus will leave from this lot at 6:30 sharp. DO NOT BE LATE! Non-runners can ride the bus too.
Everybody picks up their timing chip on Saturday at the race start. Be there NO LATER THAN 8:30. Drop bags must be placed in the correct bins for the aid station you want them to go to. If you have not weighed in, you must do so before the race starts.
Pacers are allowed after the Afton aid station. Pacers are NOT required to register, are NOT required to sign a waiver, and DO NOT have to wear a bib.
We are looking forward to seeing you Friday and/or Saturday!
Read the FAQ page thoroughly. Most of your questions are answered there. If you read it all (twice) and can’t find your answer, email us.
Packet pick-up is in Catoosa at the Hampton Inn from 3:00pm to 7:00pm. If you can’t make it you can pick-up your bib and runner handbook at the race start, but get there a little earlier to do so.
We will update the Aid Station list Monday. That will be the final list of what stations are manned and which are unmanned and where exactly they are. (of course, they will be in the handbook too.)
Life is full of trade-offs. We often choose one thing and not another and we can rarely have them both.
So it is with the decision I am sure you are all struggling with:
Where should I stay Friday night before the Mother Road 100?
While we can’t make the decision for you, we can give you the data to help you make a good choice for you.
Both Joplin and Miami have Hampton Inns that are offering you a special rate. The hotels are functionally identical so that is not a consideration.
Joplin is closer to the race start by 8 minutes and about 8.6 miles. It will take you 18 minutes to drive the 16.64 miles from the hotel to the race start.
Miami has two routes you can take to get to the race. Using I-44 it will take you 26 minutes to drive the 25.23 miles.IF you choose to get your morning kicks on Route 66 it will take you 30 minutes to drive the 17.52 miles.
If you are coming up from Tulsa Friday evening it will take you 20 minutes longer to go the extra 25 miles to Joplin.
So, if you are coming from the south you have to decide if you want to take 20 minutes and 25 miles on Friday night to save 8 minutes and 9 miles on Saturday morning. Either way, we suggest setting two alarms and getting up early enough to eat breakfast. It is going to be a long day!
