We now officially have a finish line location!

Mav spoke with the Athletic Director at the Catoosa High School and they are excited to have us finish at their track.
They have offered us the use of the showers, the concession facility and pretty much free run of the place. Hampton Inn is right across the street and we are working on a deal with them to be the host hotel. For those who are running without a crew, you will be able to park your car at the High School and take the bus to the start line Saturday morning. We will provide security during the race so your car will be safe.

Now that we have a start line and a finish line, I guess we have a race!

The town of Quapaw is just a little over 7 miles from the start line. After running south along US69 we will veer off the newer alignment onto the original alignment. In addition to getting away from the faster and more prolific traffic of the main highway, we will also get our first glimpse of what it would have looked like to travel the Mother Road in the mid 1900’s.
The Quapaw Aid Station will be hosted by Hemi’s Cafe. Henry Foster owns and operates Hemi’s and has graciously offered to put up an awning and some tables and provide the essentials for us at this first aid station. While the runners will not have time to experience the Cafe, crew members can purchase fountain drinks and food inside.

After driving the entire course backwards (on Thursday) and then forwards (all day Friday) we have updated distances, aid station locations and the list of which stations are drop bag locations.
You can see all this info on the FAQ page.
We took a lot of pictures and shot video of the entire course. Give us some time to edit the video down and we will post it for you.
We found lots of friendly people on the course and made contacts in almost every location. We think the aid stations will be great this year!

Mav, myself (T3) and my sons Sweet Tee, Action and Hip Hop all left OKC today around 3:30 bound for glory and the open road. After driving the turnpike to east Tulsa, we went to Catoosa High School to scope out the potential finish site.
It is perfect! A really nice place to finish, we are assuming we can have the opportunity to use a locker room for showers and changes, and the other things you expect at a major high school football field. Right across the street is a brand new Hampton Inn (so new it is not actually open yet). So if we cut a deal with them for rooms we will be able to literally walk across the street to get to the hotel.
Today was a fast and furious run up the route (backwards) in order to get our bearings for the more detailed tour tomorrow. We only stopped a couple of times…
First stop was at a really cool bridge over Pryor Creek.

There are lots of really interesting little bits of Route 66 history spread all along the route. We will get more pics tomorrow.
We stopped to eat in Vinita at Clanton’s Cafe. This place has been in business at this very location since 1947! The food is very good. Between us we had soup, salad, catfish, roast beef, calf fries, and a huge chicken fried chicken sandwich along with fried okra, mashed potatoes, green beans and fries. This would be a great place for crews to get lunch on Saturday.

South of Miami there is quite a bit of the old “sidewalk highway”. This 9ft wide strip of portland cement (now covered in many places with asphalt and surrounded by gravel to widen the road, is very cool. This section of the route occurs fairly early, so we will be able to enjoy it in the daylight.

We will spend the night in Miami and then start the drive along the route in the morning. We are getting really excited about the race. Hope you are too!

Laurel Kane has graciously agreed to host the aid station in Afton at (ironically) the Afton Station. Laurel and her husband, David, have worked for years to restore the old 1930’s D-X gas station into an unofficial “rest stop” for weary travelers, a small museum for Laurel’s collection of Route 66 memorabilia, and a place to purchase maps, guide books, and a few trinkets with a Route 66 theme. David keeps his collection of vintage autos there also (there are about 14 cars, many of them are Packards).

The Afton Station is an ideal place for an aid station. It is a historic landmark on the Mother Road. It is right in the middle of town and on the route we will run. And it is owned and operated by folks who have turned their passion for Route 66 into what they do.
Check out Laurel’s web site: Postcards From The Road
We are really looking forward to getting to know Laurel and David and seeing them during the run!

We are going to crown a King and Queen of the Mother Road!

Basically, the man and woman with the lowest cumulative time after running all three editions of the Mother Road 100 will be crowned the King and Queen of the Mother Road. There are currently 38 entries that qualify (having completed the first two editions). So, here is how it stands right now:
For the title of King, John Shepard isĀ in first place (with a total time of 38:34:38), Richard Smith is 0:34:11 behind him and Rene Villalobos is 1:07:21 behind.
For the title of Queen, ,Juli Aistars is leading (with a total time of 46:29:10) with Lynne Werner 0:15:23 back and Janis Anderson in third but only 0:24:15 back.
All 6 of these individuals are registered for edition 3 so we have a race within the race. Of course, anything can happen, so the rest of you two timers should not lose heart.
We also have a great award for each person who completes all three editions (Mav really put his thinking cap on for this one), so it is shaping up to be a great close out to what has been a very fun series.

Well, it is officially summer in Oklahoma. Temps are 90 everyday already and with lows in the mid 70’s it is hard to escape the heat when running. Hard to imagine that we will probably be cold when we run the Mother Road 100.3!
The registration list is updated. Sorry for the delay in getting that done.
We are working on details for the aid stations and the start and finish plan. Things are looking good. If you have any ideas or suggestions, just email us.

If you are looking for a tune-up race in Oklahoma prior to the Mother Road 100.3 (and even if you’re not) you might consider a race being put on by our friends the TATURs in Tulsa on July 2.

The TATURs are a great bunch of individuals who love to run and love to run with other people. If you have run the Mother Road with us before you may remember Brian Hoover and his crew as the completely over-the-top aid station around the 78 mile mark in both races.
The TATURs put on great races and you will certainly have a great time running with them. So check out The Inaugural TATUR Midnight Madness 50 Mile Road Race.
