Commerce

The town of Commerce, near Tar Creek, is probably best known as the home to the “Commerce Comet” baseball legend Mickey Mantle. The town began as North Miami, then changed its name to Commerce on June 1, 1914. The town’s roots are in lead and zinc mining, with the once prosperous Turkey Fat Mine located right in town. The Rock Shop, a long-established Route 66 landmark on Mickey Mantle Blvd., contains a vast display of rocks and crystals indigenous to the area.
On April 6, 1934, Clyde Barrow of “Bonnie and Clyde” fame and Henry Methvin shot two lawmen near this town — one fatally.
Commerce is also lays claim to Bo Wininger (PGA Tour Golfer), and Doug Furnas (Professional wrestler.)
